The Marsh Building, built by G. T. Marsh in 1928 with the help of Japanese craftsmen, contains Chinese, Japanese and Morrocan elements, reflecting in particular the influences on Marsh of his early years in Asia.  Registered on the U.S. Register of National Historic Places, the building and its gardens have been lovingly restored by their current owners, who purchased the property in 2007.  Mary and David will show you the property and its artifacts and will provide historic references on Marsh, the building and his broader legacy, which includes the San Francisco tea garden and the teahouse at the Huntington Gardens in Pasadena, CA.  You will learn about how the Richmond area of San Francisco was named, how Marsh was the largest importer of foreign art goods in the world during his time, and how he established a unique jewelry business that his family operated until 2001.  David and Mary will offer you a lovely snack and light refreshment at “The Marsh” and provide you with an opportunity to ask them additional questions about the building, the man, and the turtles!
